Like other places in the world, northern Nevada's history is full of colorful characters and intriguing tales. Heroes and crooks, tragedies and triumphs all find their places in the stories told around family dinner tables, blazing campfires, local restaurants, and under brilliant sunsets. One of the goals of the Virtual Humanities Center is to provide a repository of these stories.
Elko native and author Vince J. Juaristi has been collecting stories celebrating his Basque heritage as well as the extensive contacts between the Basques and Americans over the centuries. In preparation for the Smithsonian Institute's 2016 Folklife Festival tribute to Basque culture, Juaristi has presented a number of these stories in a series entitled "Intertwined" in the Elko Daily Free Press. A sample of these stories is presented below. The entire series can be viewed at this link.
