Elko Basque Festival Programs
Description
An account of the resource
A collection of the programs for the annual Elko Basque Festival, held annually on the July 4th weekend. The National Elko Basque festival began with a celebration that brought sheepherders and cattle ranchers into town for a day of celebration. The State of Nevada celebrated its centennial in 1964, and the Elko Basque Club decided to organize another grand scale Basque festival to commemorate the event. They invited all of the existing Basque clubs to participate and to send musicians, dancers, and athletes to Elko for the event. Because of the success of the activities, and the geographical centrality of Elko to other Basque communities, Elko assumed the position of the site of the annual National Basque Festival.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
NANCI'S
386 5th St.
ELKO, NEVADA
STOCKMEN'S BARBER SHOP
Stockmen's Hotel .... Elko, Nev.
Welcome to the 13th National Basque Festival! This Festival holds addi
tional meaning for all of us this year as it is also the 200th birthday of
these United States of America. In keeping with this special occasion,
our posters, programs, buttons and quilt raffle reflect the Basque pride
of being a part of America's "Melting Pot" of nations.
The Elko Euzkaldunak Club has been active since last festival. The
final work around the Fronton was completed and the project was deeded
over to the city of Elko. A long-time hope of the club was fulfilled with the
purchase of 11/2 acres of land on College Drive. A building fund has been
established with the hope of building a club house in the next few years.
Also near completion as a permanent part of Elko's Northeastern Nevada
Museum is a Basque display case complete with sound and slides.
Over the past 12 years Elko's National Basque Festival has grown and
expanded. The Elko Euzkaldunak would like to say thank you to all the
business establishments and people both local and from out of town for
the support past and present. A thanks also to the Consul General of
Spain in San Francisco and his government for their support of our
activities and projects.
As we celebrate the 13th National Basque Festival and the Nation's
200th birthday let each in his own way say "thanks" for what we enjoy
today!

On behalf of the Elko Euzkaldunak Club I welcome you to the 14th
National Basque Festival. Our theme for this year's festival is the "Herit
age of Youth." As old friends renew their many acquaintances and make
new ones, we are reminded that festival time is a time of heritage. From
gatherings such as this come the experiences and friendshjps that are
bound not only by the present and the past, but with the future as well.
In the past we have encouraged our youth in dance, music and more
recently, handball as ways of keeping the Basque heritage alive. This
year weight carrying and woodchopping will be opened to youth in the
hope of encouraging some to become more than mere spectators in
future festivals. The "Heritage of Youth" does depend on todays young
people, for they are tomorrows future.
As the activities of this 14th National Basque Festival get underway, I
would like to express the thanks of the Club to those businesses and
individuals who have supported our activities over the past years. Thanks
also to the City of Elko for it's support of the recent improvements made
on the handball court. It is sincerely hoped that everyone will have a good
time and that these two days of activities do reflect upon the "Heritage of
Youth."
