Elko Basque Festival Programs
Description
An account of the resource
A collection of the programs for the annual Elko Basque Festival, held annually on the July 4th weekend. The National Elko Basque festival began with a celebration that brought sheepherders and cattle ranchers into town for a day of celebration. The State of Nevada celebrated its centennial in 1964, and the Elko Basque Club decided to organize another grand scale Basque festival to commemorate the event. They invited all of the existing Basque clubs to participate and to send musicians, dancers, and athletes to Elko for the event. Because of the success of the activities, and the geographical centrality of Elko to other Basque communities, Elko assumed the position of the site of the annual National Basque Festival.

President's Message
Welcome to the 37th National Basque Festival. I would like to thank
everyone who has worked with the board to put our celebration
together. Community sponsors and many volunteers working together
make our festival happen.
Basques have many proud traditions: dancing, handball, eating,
weightlifting, wood chopping, and authentic music. These are the
traditions which most associate with Basques. There is one more proud
Basque tradition, working together to get a job done. As we "Celebrate
old traditions in a new millennium," remember the tradition that makes
this festival possible, working together, pitching in to help a friend
when they ask.
Have Fun!! Enjoy old Friends!! Support our sponsors!!
Thank you for coming!!

There is no shortage of theories that seek to explain the origins of the
Basques, western Europe's mystery people. They range from the
incredulous (that Basques are the survivors of the lost people of Atlantis,
the fabled land that sunk into the sea) the mythical (that Basques are
descendants of the mythical Aitor, the first Basque man) the pre-historic
(Basques descended from the Stone Age, proponents pointing to Basque
words for tools that all incorporate stone) the expansive (purported links
with other distant languages) to the probable (Basques are descendants
of the Iberians, people who once inhabited Spain).

Euskal I-lerria
The Basques defined themselves as Euskaldunak those who speak Basque
and their homeland Euskal Herria land of the Basques. Their homeland
was claimed by the emerging nation-states of Spain and France. There
are seven provinces that make up what is today considered the Basque
country. Four are in Spain and three are in France. This legacy dates
from the Treaty of the Pyrennes in 1659.

Golf Tournament
Join us Friday, June 30th, 2000 at the Ruby View Golf Course
at 11 :00 a.m. for lunch. At noon there will be a shotgun start.
The cost for the golf tournament is $40.00 per player includes
lunch, green fees and the golf cart. The tournament is a 4man scramble. Entry deadline is June 27th, 2000. If you
have any questions, call Matt Echeverria 738-7300.
The Spring Creek Music Department spent the year 2000
Spring Break by going to Euskal Herria. They were well
received in Bilbao, Durango, Lekeitio, Donostia, Zarautz,
Baiona, Gernika and Bermeo. The countryside is beautiful,
but what everyone was most impressed with was how
fabulous the people were. The students took Basque classes
and are sending letters and e-mails to maintain contact with
the new friends they made while they were there.

Saturday, July 1st
lrrintzi Contest
Sunday, July 2, 2000
3:30 pm at the Elko City Park
The downtown streets of Elko will be filled as the 37th
National Parade starts. Saturday, July 1st, at 11:00 a.m.,
the parade proceeds through the downtown streets of Elko,
ending at the Elko County Fairgrounds.
Basques are known for their culture. The lrrintzi is originally
a war cry. Now the Basques have turned this form of
protection into a competition, trying to preserve this culture
and keep this tradition alive. The lrrintzi yell is a long
wavering yell a cross of a laugh, a shriek and a horse's
neigh. The lrrintzi will send chills up your spine.

He was born Charles C. Black on August 18, 1930 in Starr Valley, into the family
of Pioneer Settlers in Elko County. He was raised in Starr Valley and Wells,
Nevada, attended school in Wells, graduating in 1948. He joined the Navy after
graduation, serving one year in the Navy and six years in the active reserves.
Chuck married Florence "Flossie" Erquiaya on April 12, 1952, this was to be the
start of his Basque involvement. Together they raised four daughters; Debbie,
Julie, Tracy, and Trina, plus many other children that refer to them as Mom and
Dad. As a family Chuck, Flossie and the girls all were involved in the Basque
Festival. Even as the girls grew up and moved away, Chuck continued to be very
active in the National Basque Festivals for 30 plus years. Chuck could be seen
directing floats, selling tickets, frying steaks, chorizos, helping in the serving line
or even passing the bota around to thirsty participants. Even though he wasn't
Basque, in 1969 Chuck was elected the first (and to date the only) "Gringo"
Basque Club President, in which he took great pride. That soon earned him the
nickname "Carlos Balsa". Chuck not only was a familiar face at the festival, but he
seemed to show up wherever someone needed a helping hand.
He was not only a good Samaritan, he was a loving husband, father and
grandfather. His other hobbies included, wood working, working in the yard,
collecting wagon wheels along with a few other things. However, Chuck's true
happiness was working in his garage, where he had an envious collection of
tools.
Chuck will truly be missed by his family, friends and the community.
