Subject

Oral history interview with Marge Hall Puella, Western Shoshone from Duck Valley Reservation (Owyhee, NV-ID), on 06/20/2008

Description

Marge Hall Puella was born on August 6, 1931 in Dona Muzza (Battle Mountain, NV) to Bessie Beeler Hall from Battle Mountain and Charlie Hall from Austin, NV. She was one of 11 children. Marge currently resides on the Duck Valley Reservation. She begins her story by speaking about how her mother would always sing at home, sometimes, with Judy Jackson, and what those songs were about. She also tells about how her grandparents use to work on the different ranches near Battle Mountain, and how when she was attending school it was segregated. She also speaks a little about Stewart Indian School and her friends who attended there, as well as her experience at Sherman Institute (boarding school) in California and her journey to finish school. Marge also speaks about the traditions and customs of the Shoshone people, and the importance therein. She also entertains us with two Shoshonean stories: Coyote and the rings and Badger, Coyote, and the Cyclone. She ends by trying to persuade the native communities to keep up the Shoshoni language.
